Barriers to Sustainable Development: Toward a Hemp Economy
Master's dissertation (MSc Smart and Sustainable Cities), School of Natural Sciences, Trinity College Dublin — University of Dublin, 2025
The study asks why hempcrete is still rare in Irish construction. It draws on policy analysis, comparative case studies and interviews with people from industry, academia, government and households already living in hemp-built homes, including cases from Ukraine.
It identifies legal ambiguity, the absence of certification, weak policy integration and supply-chain limits as the main obstacles, and argues that the U-value — the standard energy metric — does not capture what hempcrete actually does in a wall. In response the author proposes the H-Value, a metric for the circular, carbon-negative potential of natural building materials.
