Cannabinoid
Any of over 100 chemical compounds unique to the cannabis plant.
A cannabinoid is any of the chemical compounds that the cannabis plant produces and that act on the body's cannabinoid receptors. More than a hundred have been described. THC and CBD are the two most studied, but they are a small part of the family.
The plant also produces hundreds of other compounds — terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids — and a 2021 review notes that the medical potential of most of them remains largely unexamined. This is an area where the honest answer is that the research is young.
Cannabinoids made by the body itself are called endocannabinoids, and they act on the same receptors. The two best studied are anandamide and 2-AG.
